They had a James Whale retrospective here at Film Forum... really cool. I think I like Frankenstein better than Bride now. It's actually scary, and there's no music whatsoever in it except at the beginning and end. Invisible Man and Old Dark House are hilarious.

i missed that james whale retrospective. supposedly, preston sturges wrote the original script for the invisible main that whale rejected or as sturges put it, "he thought it was a piece of cheese".
i love the scene in frankenstein where boris karloff touches a ray of sunshine... stefano acted the same way when he was a baby.
the ridiculous mini-comic i'm working on now is a warped version of robert louis stevenson's 'the master of ballantrae' as interpreted by a warped version of disney characters, donald, mickey, and the gang.

That's interesting. I guess the tone of the movie was more malevolent-comic than comic. I hear it sticks very close to the book, which I haven't read.
